Softball History
with Coach Danver's updates, 6-17-19
Coach Danver recently sent me this (updated 6-17-19) PDF of All-time Lady Bison records
which I am excited to include here. Coach Danver gleaned many of the numbers by researching
old back issues of The Progress. Thanks Coach !
The next set of documents were collected and provided by Mr. Fred Kavelak of gantnews.com last
summer and I'm just now getting around to adding them. They cover seasons 2014-2018 and are
detailed stats for every player on the Varsity team and complete season results. We are much in
Mr. Kavelak's debt.
And, for nostalgia's and history's sake, I've reprinted a bunch of stats as of 2006 (the first year for this site
and the first year that Coach Dixon was at the helm) that were compiled and shared by Coach Dixon's son
Brady. Brady kept the book for his Dad and, I've always suspected, that gave him the perfect excuse to sit in
the dugout and ride the bus with the pretty Lady Bison girls. A few of Brady's numbers are a bit different than
Coach Danver's but not by enough to be too concerned about. They are reposted here exactly as they appeared
in 2006. Hilaree Dixon, whose name appears many times throughout the record book is Coach Dixon's daughter
and Brady's sister. She also played Lady Bison Basketball and graduated from CHS in 2006.

Title IX ~
Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the United States of America that was passed as part of the Education Amendments
of 1972. The law stated "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The effect of the law was to ensure that public schools and colleges receiving federal funds had to offer the
same opportunities for girls and women to participate in sports programs as had already been available to boys and men.
1972 is seen as the landmark year for girls' and women's sports. And it was in that year that Lady Bison Softball began,
although only as an intramural activity.
This is the only page in the '72 "Bison" dedicated to the
Softball team, and at that, seems to share space with
some Basketball photos. Lady Bison Softball in 1972
was an intramural activity and would not become a
recognized interscholastic sport until 1977.
Neither Softball or Girls Basketball merits a
mention on the "Letterwinners" or "Scoreboard" pages.
The caption for the group picture reads:
Row 1: D. Freeman, G. Sabonosh, T. McGarry, P. Stephens,
K. Johnston, D. Williams, N. Read, G. Scruggs.
Row 2: L. Gill, C. Palovscik, C. Sayers, S. Peters,
T. McGarry, B. Noone, S. Smith.
Row 3: S. Kovalick, B. Jenkins, L. Homan, J. Dixon,
C. Peters, J. Thompson, D. Quinn, G. Lambert.
There are no pictures or mention of Softball in any of the "Bison" yearbooks from the years 1973-76,
so apparently in those years there was not enough interest to field teams, even as an intramural activity.

18-1 ?
This one is a real puzzle. It starts out by saying in the upper left
corner: "The 1999 Lady Bison Softball team put together an impress-
ive 15 game winning streak on their way to a school record 16 wins."
Yet looking at the scores to the right shows 18 wins versus only the
"disappointing 6-4 playoff loss to DuBois" which, it continues "could
not put a damper on a fine 16-3 season." We'll assume that the
"15 game winning streak" statement is correct but I know of no way
to determine just where in those 19 games it took place." Maybe I'll
try to get hold of somebody that can clear it up for us. Obviously the
"scoreboard" as printed in the "Bison" has some errors somewhere.
As mentioned up there near the beginning of this section, the 1972 Bison yearbook has a (1/2) page devoted to that year's team but
then there is a strange silence from 1973-76. The 1972 team was only an Intramural activity and 1977 is where we continue our
narrative. That was the first year in the modern era that Softball was an Interscholastic Sport.
Yearbook pages from 1977 thru 1984 are included for all of those seasons along with scoreboards. Then there is a nice big gap (85-88)
until we hit the 1989 - 1995 time period and then just few more entries ('99, '02' '10) after that. These gaps occur only because
we don't have those "Bison" yearbooks on hand. So the, the mission is clear; go to Historica and the Shaw Library and a few other
places and try to track them down. I'm not too concerned about the years after about 2007; those seasons are pretty completely documented elsewhere on the site, though we'll try to get those too.
There are no doubt a lot of misspellings in my captions and comments and some are surely my fault. However, there are others that
were there on the Bison pages as printed and even though I recognized them as errors, instead of correcting them I left them alone
for historical interest. For instance, some of the girls have their name spelled correctly on one page and incorrectly on another;
the town name "Ridgway" seems to be consistently misspelled "Ridgeway." Things like that.

"Bison" Yearbook Excerpts
1994's Bison didn't include the Lady Bison's scores/record here or anywhere else. Stranger still, scores weren't posted for any of that
year's sports; not even for Football which enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history.

1990
Just for the heck of it I went through all of the C.H.S. Yearbooks
that I have, all the way back to 1915 trying to find some mention of
Softball, even as an intramural diversion. Not surprisingly, I found
nothing earlier than the 1972 picture posted above. There was Girls' Basket-Ball in those days but nothing else. However, in the 1924
"Breeze" (as the yearbook was called before becoming the "Bison"
in 1930) I did find this rare editorial comment on the lack of
Athletic opportunities for girls, almost fifty years before Title IX.
You can click the image to enlarge but it still may be a little blurry
so here is the comment, verbatim:
......Girls' Athletics
Just at the present time, the division features in Athletics is
inequitable. In those things intended to develop both mind and body
the girls' participation is in the background. While we boost to the
top the boys' sports with the "true blue" spirit known to C.H.S., we
feel that if such games as Hockey, Volley Ball, and Track were includ-
ed in the general course for girls that there would be more satisfaction
and enthusiasm. But instead of all these visions being realized, we
must be content with a little basket ball.
Schools are built up, interest enhanced, and promotions insured by
an equity in the pleasures as well as the hardships. Equity is justice -
a just regard to right or claim and if I were a poet, I would write (to
remain permanently on the blackboard) these words:
These are best for you and me
And let it be our constant plea
To dwell in Love and Equity
Our mothers had the constitution amended to give them an equal pos-
ition and all we, the girls of Clearfield High, ask is to be given a more
satisfactory position in the line of sports. When this is done, we shall
feel we have been recognized in such manner that befits the major
enrollment of the school.
There is no byline so we don't know the author, but the Assistant Athletic Editor that year was Katherine Geppert, so she's a strong
candidate. Whether Ms. Geppert or someone else, the writer clearly had some sensibilities far advanced of the general thinking of the
times. And also, whoever it was must have been sticking her neck way out there. I'm sure that editorializing in the pages of the year-
book was not encouraged, then or now. Keep in mind that women had finally been granted the right to vote only four years before. Wow!
Update: I spoke to Joe Geppert of Clearfield and while Katherine was indeed his aunt he couldn't say for sure if she was the author.
Interesting to note that Joe's nieces are pictured as playing Lady Bison Softball; Peggy Geppert in 80-82 and Michelle Geppert in 1984.
It's fun to speculate on the possibility that their great aunt Katherine would have been pleased that Peggy, Michelle and other girls
would have that opportunity even if it was almost sixty years later.
